Glenville State College President Thomas Powell has frozen the
school's budget and called for more than $600,000 in cuts. At
the same time there is discussion of the school becoming an arm of
West Virginia University. Powell says the college will have a
$600,000 deficit this year.
Pay raises which were mandated by the legislature six years ago and
never fully funded, is the main reason, he said.
Last year the college spent $800,000 more than it took in and they
dipped into financial reserves to make ends meet. Powell
says the reserves are almost depleted.
He has ordered a hiring freeze and asked the college's vice presidents
and athletic directors to cut their costs.
He also created a nine-person panel to make further recommendations to
him by March 1.
Meanwhile, a recent West Virginia study has said "No community college
can thrive under a four year college," and calls for
them to split their relationships.
