Glenville, W.Va. - A Glenville State College ROTC student has made history in the programs' battalion. GSC senior Marc Jones has received the first excellent score for the ROTC Yellow Jacket Battalion since 2009.
The accomplishment occurred during the program's Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) in Fort Lewis, Washington during 29 days of testing between the cadets' junior and senior years. The point-based camp accommodated 5,700 cadets from 273 host schools around the country.
"Receiving a score of 'excellent' at LDAC this summer completely astounded me. I felt totally prepared for the camp from my experiences with being deployed, skills from the Army and people, and prior service knowledge. Credit goes to my mentors from West Virginia State University and members of my past units; they have shaped me into who I am today. My advice for future cadets is to be yourself, don't let the leadership go to your head, and be respectful because respect will follow," said Jones.
"The ROTC program is very proud of Jones. He represented Glenville State College in a positive light," said GSC ROTC Major Charles Beirne.
Jones is the son of Larry and Melissa Jones of Gassway (Braxton County), West Virginia. He is a very busy student on the GSC campus. Jones is the 2013 Pioneer mascot, Student Government Association vice president, Sigma Omega Beta president, and Greek Council president. He is also an active member in the GSC Veterans Association and Relay for Life as well as part of the GSC Jazz band and Woodwind Ensemble. Jones has been in the military for the past six years and is an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran.
The GSC ROTC program was reinstated to the GSC curriculum in 2010 after a ten-year hiatus. GSC's ROTC program has grown to be the largest in the Yellow Jacket Battalion with 29 out of the 50 cadets from GSC. The battalion also includes West Virginia State University, University of Charleston, and West Virginia Institute of Technology University.
