The Relay For Life of Wirt County is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Camp Barbe Fairgrounds. This is the first year that the event will be held on a Saturday in the community and the planning committee is very excited.
The event will begin at noon and end at 12:05 a.m. Sunday morning. All of the traditions of Relay For Life will be continued except ending the event at sunrise. However, we will end the event into the next day.
There are many reasons for the change and we hope the community becomes excited about this change. Many teams have to rush on Friday evening after work to get to the event to setup their campsites for onsite fundraising and activities. That makes it stressful and not always enjoyable. For many years, several Relay For Life teams have been unable to stay all night long. It is hard to stay up all night for participants with young children as well.
With the event changing to Saturday and beginning at noon this allows for lots of activities throughout the day, lots of entertainment, an earlier Purse and Bake Auction and lots of concessions for lunch and dinner. Currently, Smokey Bear is scheduled to be there and a helicopter that kids and adults can sit in and have their picture taken. The possibilities are endless for this event.
The Planning Committee is in full swing and would like to have ideas and help planning this exciting event. The next planning meeting will be held November 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Giovanni's Pizza in Elizabeth.
