The early doe season seemed to be a success in Calhoun County. I heard plenty of shooting. Enough to rival the first Saturday of buck season.

In our party of four, I was the only hunter to not harvest a doe. Three lovely lady hunters harvesting three deer is a win. Even though I struck out in Calhoun, I was able to connect on Thursday with a nice Nicholas County doe.

Doe harvest is an important part of deer management. If you want better bucks, take out some of the does. Long gone are the days of protecting does in order to increase herd numbers. Years of protecting does lead to a one-sided buck to doe ratio.

Please be aware that hunters can harvest two does a day now. Or they can harvest one buck and a doe a day. They cannot harvest two bucks in a day.
