St. Marys came into Friday night's game at Mount Zion undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state among Class A schools. Calhoun came into the game winless in five tries.
And what most folks expected to happen happened as St. Marys rolled to a 53-12 victory.
But unlike last year when St. Marys took a 72-0 halftime lead and played all its substitutes in a second half that saw the clock continually running in order to keep the score closer by making the game shorter.
The game should not be classified as a moral victory. It should not be classified as a white knuckle affair because it wasn't. But Calhoun has come a long way since last season's totally one-sided affair.
The Red Devils, despite the inequity on the scoreboard, were competitive, especially on offense where they were able to move the ball from time to time.
Defensively the Red Devils could not figure out a way to stop David Gray. Gray ran the ball six times and had 86 yards rushing. He ran for three touchdowns and returned an intercepted pass 49 yards for another.
The Red Devils also had some trouble stopping Jeremy Pratt who came into the game was Gray's backup. Pratt had 57 yards rushing on six carries while scoring two touchdowns.
The Blue Devils also had touchdowns from Noah Spitzer and Colby Brode while Garrett Furr kicked five of his eight extra point attempts.
Calhoun had two touchdown runs from Logan Moore.
Moore scored on a one-yard run late in the first quarter and added another one-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter.
Moore had 25 yards rushing on 12 carries while hitting on seven of his 19 passes for 124 yards with his longest going to sophomore Ethyn Miller who had a 78-yard reception setting up the Red Devils' first score.
Miller led the way in passing yardage with all 78 of his yards coming on that one pass. He was backed by Kirkland Allen with 24 yards on two receptions. Mason Sheldon had 15 yards on three catches while Casey Ritchie caught one for 13.
Casey Ritchie also had 38 yards rushing on four attempts while finishing right behind twin brother Cole Ritchie who had 40 yards on 15 attempts.
Rushed for 23 yards on nine carries with Seth Moore chipped in with 20 yards on three carries.
Although not a deigned run junior tackle Jorge Webster picked up a fumble in the backfield and rumbled 22 yards before being dragged down. It was the Red Devils longest rushing play of the night.
Calhoun returns to action next Friday night with a game at Roane County.
