Mary Lou Garrett, age 90 of Cox's Mill Community, West Virginia, departed this life 1:05 p.m., Monday, September 30, 2013 at her residence following a brief illness.
Born March 1, 1923 in Upshur County, West Virginia, daughter of the late Asa V. and Reta Pearl Douglas Cooper.
Mary Lou was a devoted school teacher of 27 years but had to take early retirement because of vision problems. She was a graduate of Tanner High School and Glenville State College and spent most of her teaching career in Ritchie County including 3 one room schools. Mary Lou loved her grandchildren, her cats, listening to the birds, and butterflies. She was also a member of the Troy Baptist Church.
On October 5, 1946 she was united in marriage to Nelson Edward Garrett, who preceded her in death on March 23, 2013.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Susan Messenger and husband John of Glenville WV, and Nancy L. Harold and husband William of Alexandria, VA; 3 grandchildren, Angie Volk and husband Frank of Cross Lanes WV, Greg Messenger and wife Chris of Cross Lanes, and Amber Wright and husband Eric of Chestertown MD; 5 great-grandchildren, Garrett and Lauren Volk, Tiarra Thornton, Emma and Andrew Wright; 1 brother Roy Cooper and wife Linda of Parkersburg WV. Mary Lou is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and her beloved caretaker Annette Ledbetter.
Along with her husband and parents Mary Lou was preceded in death by 1 brother and sister-in-law, John Paul Cooper and wife Sheila.
Funeral Services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 3, 2013 with Rev. Gene Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Weston Masonic Cemetery, Weston, West Virginia. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gilmer County Cancer Fund C/O First Baptist Church in Glenville.
