Seth Shuff scored two long touchdown runs but it was his extra point conversion in the first period that proved to be the deciding points as the Gilmer Middle School Titans slipped past Calhoun Middle School, 16-12, Thursday night at Mount Zion.

Shuff scored on a 70-yard run in the first period and added the extra points on a run giving the Titans an 8-0 lead, which, with two Calhoun Middle failed extra point tries was enough to provide the margin of victory.

Shuff scored again in the third from 50 yards away and Gilmer again added the extra points.

Calhoun, now 0-3, got on the board in the second period when Caden Hicks connected with Ben Frederick on a 12-yard touchdown pass. It was the Red Devils first touchdown pass since the final game of the 2012 season and only the third in the last two years.

Hicks scored on a seven-yard run in the third period to make it 16-12 but after that the defenses took over and neither team was able to put any more points on the board.

Calhoun goes on the road in search of its first win next Thursday night when it travels to Ritchie County. Gilmer is at home to Williamstown.
