UPDATE - A Parkersburg man Brian Neal Lockhart, 41, died Saturday of burn injuries over 85% of his body.
Lockhart is the son of former Calhoun resident Mildred Murphy Lockhart and husband Roger.
Parkesburg police received a 911 call that the man was on fire from am explosion while a group was around a bonfire.
ORIGINAL STORY - Parkersburg police officers
responded to a man on fire call late Friday night.
Police discovered Brian Neal Lockhart, 41, and several other subjects had been sitting around
a fire with a gasoline can nearby.
Lockhart reportedly
noticed the gas can was swelling from the heat and attempted
to move it, at which time the can exploded, catching his clothing on fire.
Sgt. Greg Collins said Lockhart attempted to extinguish the fire
by rolling on the ground, eventually rolling down a hill
into a heavily wooded area.
Rescuers were able to
extinguish the fire after reaching him. First responders
were forced to use a long rope and backboard to stabilize
Lockhart and pull him back up the hill.
He is in Cabell-Huntington burn center, listed in critical condition with burns on 85% of his body.
While officials were helping Lockhart, several people at the
residence allegedly became disorderly with first responders
by screaming and cursing at them, also physically
interfering with the rescue effort, according to the press release.
Officers arrested Joseph Anthony Sams for obstructing after he declined to to leave the scene.
Sams stated "it was his ******* property and
he was not going inside, according to the release. "
