Calhoun prosecutor Shannon Johnson has requested the Calhoun Commission to make her position full-time. Calhoun is among only three West Virginia counties that do not have a full time prosecutor.
Johnson maintains that the work load often requires 48 hours a week in the office, and is faced with increased cases.
Commission president Kevin Helmick expressed concern that the county budget would be hard-pressed to allow the request, which calls for a $34,977 increase, without health insurance, and asked for the WV State Auditor to verify if the county budget could allow for the increase.
Currently the salary is $50,160, less than salaries paid magistrates.
The auditor's office responded with a broad, inconclusive response in making a legal recommendation to the commission.
Johnson told the commission she would exempt herself from the county paying her health insurance if the position was to go full-time.
