Press Release

Nettles, one of state's youngest elected officials, is
"Democrat of the Year"

Calhoun Assessor Jason Nettles has been named Democrat of the Year by the Calhoun Democrat Executive Committee, according to Chairperson Marge Evans. Nettles will receive special recognition at the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner in Charleston on September 14.

Nettles said "I believe in the Democrat Party. It has always been the party of the working class people and the underprivileged, since the days of Andrew Jackson back in the early 1800's.

"The party has always tried to legislate to decrease the gap between the working class and the rich, and advocate for the public's interest." Nettles said "I am truly honored. It means I might have done something right to help the party."

The Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner, which often draws well over 1000 Democrats, is a "Tribute to Senator Jay Rockefeller."

L to R: Marge Evans, chairperson; Bob Weaver, vice-chairperson and Marty Parks, will help serve Calhoun's Democrat party

During an organizational meeting last week, Bob Weaver was elected vice-chair of the Calhoun party, and will help spearhead an effort to get people to register with the party.

Weaver, a life-long Democrat and a current Calhoun Commissioner, has been active in public and constitutional issues and civil liberties, and has been a party worker for many years.

He said "Our loyal Democrats plan to reach out to the young and the old in the county, trying to convince them the party serves the interests of common citizens. Getting out the vote is essential to the strength of our democracy." County chairperson Marge Evans said "We would like to help people understand what the Democrat Party is about, and invite them to register. We have not always done a good job explaining our history, which is a history for the people." The group is organizing a "Meet the Candidates" night prior to the November election. It is tentatively set for October 5 at the Arnoldsburg Community building. The committee is also looking at opening a headquarters prior to the general election.

Members of the committee, Randall Arnold, Burl Postalwait, Bob Parks, Marge Evans, Bev Mullins, Freda Whytsell, Faustine McCartney, Dennis Dickson, and non-voting members Bob Weaver, vice-chairperson, and Marty Parks, secretary and treasurer.
