SIGN-UP FOR HEARTWOOD CLASSES NOW - Maskmaking, Dance, Movement For Health

A 12-week course in Maskmaking will be taught by Jude Binder this Fall as part of the schedule of classes offered for Heartwood in the Hills 2013 Program.

Binder has taught maskmaking at Empire State College, New York City, NY, Fairmont State College, Fairmont, WV Governor's Honors Academy, Beckley Youth Museum, Beckley, and Sunrise Museum, Charleston.

Classes will be held on Friday afternoon's beginning Friday, Sept. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Sidney Binder Art Building at Heartwood. The Fall Program will run from Sept. 8 - Dec. 6, 2013.

During the maskmaking class students, teens through seniors will be lead through the process of creating tarlatan masks like those seen in Heartwood productions. Jude is known throughout the stage as a master mask maker in addition to a wood carver and dancer.

A new class for boys and girls ages 7 and up being offered this fall is Introduction to Dance and Theatre. This is an after-school class on Tuesday's from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. taught by Amy Nicholas. Heartwood's Creative Arts for Children's class for ages 5 and up will not be held this Fall but will be available for enrollment in the Spring.

Enrollment is also open for new and returning students to join the Performing Arts Program which is open to boys and girls ages 10 and up. Students in the program are required to take 2 dance classes per week. An orientation for these students will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Anyone enrolling in this program should plan on attending the orientation. Also offered will be Movement for Health and Centering. This class is for teens, adults and seniors on Wednesday afternoon's from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Movement class combines rhythmic, meditative and aerobic movement sequences with anatomical analysis to achieve a general upgrading of the body and an increased sense of well being. No previous dance experience is required. There are also classes in ballet and dance technique offered for those with previous dance experience.

The popular after-school Artwork for Children class will held on Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. for boys and girls ages 8 and up.
