Store employees had difficult day, struggle for words
It was a difficult Monday for employees at Grantsville's Foodland, trying to deal with
the untimely death of 26-year-old Amanda Rogers. Rogers died in a car accident
Saturday night, one of three occupants in a car which crashed against a Barnes Run
hillside.
Rogers started working at the local supermarket about ten years ago when she was
in high school. "She worked evenings, starting as a check-out and worked her way up
to manager," said Steve Ferrell, a general manager for the seven store chain.
General manager Ferrell said she was the best
Ferrell said she was likely the best manager in the stores. "She was a real fit for this
kind of job. She worked it like it was her own. She felt great responsibility," he said.
"She was a great employee, always helping everyone here."
"She was much too young to die. It will be very difficult to replace her," he
concluded.
Deli manager Boatright remembers Amanda
Deli manager Gretchen Boatright, holding back tears, said "I'm at a loss. It seems like
everything was good about Amanda. A good person who really did her job." Boatright
said "I know all these girls (in the accident) and it is really hard."
Faye Barnhart (L) and Helen Sampson "She was the
backbone"
Seventeen year employee Helen Sampson and Faye Barnhart, who has worked at the
store for five years, said they were having difficulty doing their produce job
yesterday. "She was the heart and backbone of the store," said Sampson. "She'll be
missed."
Barnhart said "She was Amanda...mom, boss and friend."
Steveanna Cunningham (L) and Eve Reed (R) "I loved her"
"Amanda - there's no way to explain her. She was not only my boss, she was my best
friend. I loved her and will never forget her," said Steveanna
Cunningham.
Eve Reed said "She was like mother, sister, friend and boss, all rolled into one. They
broke the mold when they made her. She will not be forgotten."
Vonda Laughlin "A wonderful friend"
Vonda Laughlin said "Amanda was a very special person, She was loving, caring,
giving, sharing and just a wonderful, dear friend...She will always hold a special place
in my heart. I loved her and will miss her."
Numerous other Foodland employees attempted to place their thoughts and feelings
into word, but just couldn't do it.
"We will, like always, move ahead without her, but remembering her will be around for
a long time," concluded a store employee.
Funeral services will be held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville on Thursday, August 29,
2002 at 2 p.m. Reverend James Johnson will officiate. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill
