Police say there was a stabbing at the Rustic Motel in Jefferson, Kanawha County, about 9 p.m. Monday.
The victim was identified as Lasalle Barnett, 31, a report saying he was stabbed at least five times in the neck.
A first person report said Barnett got into an altercation with a woman and her father over how Barnett cared for his children.
Sometime during the argument, Barnett was stabbed by either the woman or her father, the report said, both leaving the scene.
He was taken to CAMC General, his condition unknown.
The West Virginia State Police, Kanawha County Sheriff's Office and South Charleston Police Department are investigating.
