Glenna Opal Stalnaker Fleming, 90, of Arnoldsburg, WV passed peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 6, 2013.
She was born August 5, 1922, the eldest of seven children of the late Fenton R. and Opal Downs Stalnaker of Orma, WV.
Glenna graduated from Calhoun High School in 1939 and completed her Standard Normal Certificate and Bachelor's Degree at Glenville State College. She retired from the Calhoun County school system after more than 35 years as a teacher and principal. Glenna challenged and inspired thousands of young minds and her educational legacy is enduring.
In her community, she was instrumental in helping launch the West Fork Community Action and the West Virginia Molasses Festival, and was actively involved in Extension Homemakers on the county, regional and state level for many years, most recently being a member of the Crafty Ladies.
She was a lifelong Baptist and attended the New Life Fellowship Baptist Church. Glenna also served as a 4-H club leader of the Arnoldsburg Eagles and volunteered with many activities in the area. She was a Past Matron and 50-year member of the Grantsville Chapter #73 Order of the Eastern Star.
Glenna was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, William H. Stalnaker, Marvin F. Stalnaker, Paul D. (Pete) Stalnaker and one sister, Wanda Lee White.
Surviving is her husband of 71 years, Guy Paul Fleming of Arnoldsburg; three children, Ron (Pam) Fleming of Walker WV, Sue (Mike) Haymaker of Bluefield WV, and Cheryl (John) McKinney of Glenville WV. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Angela Ellis-Miller of Fairmont WV, Dee (Garald) Cottrell of New Bern NC, and Ronnie P. (Valerie) Fleming II of Walker WV; six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Emma Lou Chenoweth of Ravenna OH and Orma (Toots) Downs of Southington OH, and dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the caring Medical, Pharmacy, and Hospice personnel and to Glenna's loving in-home caregivers Bev Mullins, Loretta Bishop, Robin King, Bambi (Tyke) Davis, Patty Smith, and Erica Falls.
Funeral services will be held Thursday July 11, 2013, 1:00 pm, at the Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg with Rev. Loren Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery at Millstone.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 pm Wednesday and one hour prior to the services Thursday. Order of the Eastern Star memorial services will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. |
