Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Thursday that WV will join 22 other states in expanding Medicaid coverage to about 92,000 non-insured residents.
A full time minimum wage worker in West Virginia working for $15,080 per year, nearly $3,600 above the federal poverty level, which was a previous cutoff point for medicaid insurance, will be eligible.
Tomblin said a financial analysis says that more than $5 billion in federal funds will pay for the additional coverage over the next decade, with the state picking up $375 million.
Tomblin said about 166,000 more West Virginians would qualify, but an analysis estimates that 91,500 uninsured residents will likely enroll.
The agreement calls for cost controls through managed care for some Medicaid services and co-payments for others.
