Fifteen dead birds from Calhoun, Roane, Wirt, Wood, Ritchie, Pleasants have been
sent to the Southeastern Wildlife Co-op for Disease Study in Georgia. The center will
evaluate the birds for the West Nile Virus, according to Steve Bayer of the Mid-Ohio
Valley Health Department.
At least four birds in four West Virginia counties have proven positive.
No cases of the virus have been reported in humans in the state.
The Center for Disease Control is predicting 1000 people could be infected by the
West Nile Virus before cool weather eliminates mosquitos. The virus has been found
in all states east of the Rocky Mountains.
159 cases in humans have been reported this year, in nine states with nine
fatalities.
