Phyllis J. (Jackie) Kerby, 74, of East Main Street, Salem, West Virginia died suddenly Saturday evening,
August 10, 2002, following an auto accident at the intersection of Routes 23 and 50.
She was born October 24, 1927, in Calhoun County, the daughter of the late Roy and Lenna Whipkey
Offutt. Her husband, Robert Kerby, whom she married May 27, 1950, died March 2, 2001.
Mrs. Kerby was a member of the Vermont Baptist Church. After obtaining her RN degree at Good
Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky, in 1948, she was employed at that hospital until 1950. In
1952, she began working at the original Union Protestant Hospital, Washington Avenue,
Clarksburg, WV afterward working at St. Mary's Hospital and then for United Hospital Center for
nine years. She then found a nursing position with Salem College and worked there for several
years.
She is survived by one son, Robert Lee (Chip) Kerby of Salem; three daughters, Mrs. George
(Debbie) Myers of New Martinsville, WV, Barbara Kerby of Durham, NC, and Mrs. Neil (Saren)
Swentzel of West Union, WV; and eight grandchildren.
Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Betty Grace
Offutt.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem, the Rev.
Robert Merritt and the Rev. Chad Ash presiding. Interment will be in the K of P Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
