The West Virginia Senate Transportation Committee of the legislature is pushing a bill that would give amnesty to drivers who have had their licenses suspended or revoked because of unpaid tickets that are more than 10-years old.
The bill, if passed, would let those drivers get their licenses back without paying the fines, although the fines would still remain on the books.
Commercial drivers' licenses would be excluded from the amnesty.
Senator William Laird said that West Virginia suspends or revokes about 90,000 licenses per year, 54,000 for non-payment.
Laird said he pushing the bill because those in rural counties with little public transportation, revoking a license is akin to sentencing them to unemployment. |
