GILMER SCHOOLS ASKS SBA FOR $11.1 FOR CONSOLIDATED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

(03/12/2013)
Representatives of more than half a dozen state school systems went before the state School Building Authority Monday to ask for a portion of $42 million the SBA has to allocate for school construction projects.

The biggest request was from Gilmer County.

They're asking for $11.1 million to build a new Gilmer County Elementary School that would consolidate Glenville, Sand Fork and Normantown elementary schools.

The county has $900,000 to put toward the project.

The consolidation issue has been contentious, particularity after the state took over the school system.

The SBA will hear from nine other school systems.

The SBA will make their final funding decisions at the April meeting.

The SBA has already funded $9.5 million toward a consolidated Troy-Alum bridge school, a joint project between Gilmer and Lewis County.
