Betsy Lupton Atkins, 57, of Spencer, passed away at home March 1, 2013 after an extended illness. Betsy was a devoted wife, mother, and educator to the children of Roane County for over 27 years.
Originally from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, Betsy came to Roane County to become a teacher in 1979. In 1983, she married James "Jim" Atkins, and soon welcomed two sons James "Jamie" and Christopher.
Her devotion to her adopted home, where she would spend the next 34 years of her life, became apparent through her dedication to the children and youth of Roane County through her work at Spencer Elementary School.
Betsy's involvement in the community often took her outside of the classroom. She was involved with various P.A.T.C.H. programs and even served several summers as the Manager of the Spencer City Pool. Additionally, Betsy and Jim most recently attended Gilboa Baptist Church.
Betsy was preceded in death by her father Edward Lupton, and is survived by her husband Jim, son James and his wife Chelsey of Winfield, son Christopher and wife Allison of Huntington, her mother Shirley Lupton of Willow Grove, P.A., brother Dennis Lupton and his wife Brenda of Huntington Beach, C.A. and her niece Jessica Surface and husband Gabriel of Baton Rouge, L.A.
Friends may call between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 with Pastor Larry Greathouse officiating. All services will take place at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, with interment at Eventide Cemetery in Spencer.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Betsy's honor to a Scholarship Fund care of Poca Valley Bank.
