Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin recognized a Roane County deputy sheriff during his state-of-the-state address.
"Tonight we are joined by a hero...Deputy Sheriff John Westfall," he said.
Governor Tomblin introduced deputy Westfall who is recovering from injuries received during the shoot-out that killed two state troopers at Wallback.
He and his wife, Emily Westfall, Roane County Assessor, received a long standing ovation.
Westfall was shot three times during the August 28, 2012 incident in Clay County that left three dead.
Westfall ended up in a shoot-out with the man who shot the troopers, Westfall reportedly shot in the abdomen, shoulder and right hand.
His life was likely spared because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
