Jeff Bonnell probably did more to lift Doddridge to a 55-48 victory over Calhoun County in the 13th place LKC game Thursday night than imagined.
And he did it without scoring a point.
With Calhoun holding a close lead early in the second quarter Bonnell charged into Calhoun's Ryan Slider knocking him to the floor and rendering him unable to play for a few minutes.
With Slider out of the game Drew Lett, the man Slider was covering in Calhoun's man-to-man defense, came alive and popped in eight of his team leading 19 points. Also with Slider on the bench Calhoun's offense bogged down as Doddridge enjoyed a 21-7 second quarter advantage giving it a 26-16 halftime lead more than erasing the 9-5 edge Calhoun had in the first period.
The Red Devils did not give up and roared back in the second half to knot the score late in the contest.
Calhoun outscored Doddridge 15-14 in the third period and 17-15 in the fourth.
However, Doddridge got most of its 15 points after the score was tied.
And most of them were by the freshman Lett who had seven fourth quarter points including four of the Bulldogs last six. The other came on a shot by Keith Britton with about a minute remaining.
Doddridge, 6-13, was led by Lett in several categories including point (19), rebounds (eight), assists (three) and steals (three). He was backed by Bonnell and TJ Baldwin with 11 each. Clayton Yeager and Ashton Hinzman had four each while Britton and David Lipscomb had three each.
Game honors went to Calhoun's Tyler Gerwig with 21. Gerwig had five field goals and added 11 of 14 free throws. Gerwig also had seven rebounds tying Ricky Hall, Slider and Trent Phillips for team high.
Phillips added seven points while Hall had two and Lucas Wilson one.
Luke Moore, Ethyn Miller, Sam Brady and Derek Dawson all played but did not score.
There was no junior varsity game.
Calhoun, 2-18, returns to action with a Monday night doubleheader at Parkersburg Catholic in the last regular season game of the season.
