Azelle Witte Arnold passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at The Heritage at Lowman, Chapin, SC. She was blessed with 97 years.
Ms. Arnold was born on August 6, 1915 to the late Homer and Florence Witte in Calhoun County WV.
A memorial service celebrating Ms. Arnold's life was held at the chapel on The Heritage at Lowman campus on Saturday, January 12, 2013. A private burial will be held at the Minnora Cemetery in Minnora, WV.
Ms. Arnold graduated from Glenville State College in Glenville, WV. She had a very successful career as a school teacher. She spent 30 years in Okinawa, Japan teaching at the Zukeran Elementary School. She had a great love for her 4th graders both military and Japanese children. She had many stories to tell about her 4th graders and enjoyed talking about their Friday afternoon ball games. After retirement, Ms. Arnold lived for a number of years in Spring Hill, FL. In 2008, she moved to Columbia SC to be near her nephew, Mike Witte.
She is survived by her family, nephews Mike (Lynn) Witte of Chapin SC, and David (Cindy) Suttle of Boiling Springs SC; niece Debbie (Jim) Robertson of Irmo SC. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews, Kim Haley of Chapin SC, Jeff Suttle of Newport Richey FL, Maggie Robertson of Malta OH, Greg Witte of Tampa FL, Erin Robertson of Irmo SC; great-great nephew Christopher Haley of Chapin SC;
great-great nieces Molly Suttle of Moore SC, and McKinley Witte of Tampa FL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jeanne Witte Suttle; brother Paul Witte; great nephews, Chris Witte and Steve Suttle.
The family expresses appreciation to the staff at The Heritage at Lowman and Lutheran Hospice for their care and services to Ms. Arnold during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Palmetto Missions, 7000 Nursery Road, Irmo, SC 29063 for school scholarships to educate children in Mololola, Honduras.
