Kaleb Greathouse is a good player.
The 6-1 Walton eighth grader has guard skills in a center's body. That was proved Thursday night when the Tigers played him out front on the defense where he towered over the Calhoun Middle School guards.
He racked up steal after steal and scored 29 points while leading Walton to a 57-26 victory over the Red Devils.
How dominant was Greathouse?
With him in the game for three and a half quarters Walton rolled to a 52-12 lead. When he came out of the game the Red Devils outscored the Tigers 15-5 to set the final score.
With Greathouse on the point defensively Walton took a 17-4 first quarter lead as he scored 10.
He had nine in the second quarter as the Tigers enjoyed an 11-3 advantage and a 28-7 halftime lead.
The third was more of the same as scored 10 of the Tigers' 17. Calhoun had five at it was 45-13 heading into the final period.
To prove the 29-point effort was no fluke all one need to do is note that he had 26 points in the first game the Tigers played the Red Devils.
Calhoun went into the game with a manpower deficit as it has lost two starters to academics and another - Christ Thornton - to an injury.
Without those three CMS played a makeshift starting line that included Zack Yanero, Jerry Jones, Ben Frederick, Sonny Wilson and Trevor Carter with Christopher Kirkland and Buck Marks coming off the bench.
Carder led the Calhoun attack with nine while Yanero chipped in eight. Frederick added five while Jones and Wilson had two each. Kirkland and Marks did not score.
Ironically CMS took a 2-0 lead when Wilson stole the ball and sneaked in for a basket. But that was the only lead CMS was to have.
Greathouse was not the only Tiger in double figures as Cole Ashley had 14.
It dropped off from there, however, as Ethan Moffatt added five while Logan Harper had four, John Estep three and Chase Starcher two.
Christian Mace, Colin Greathouse and Angelo Pennesi all played but did not score.
Walton enjoyed even a bigger size advantage in the B game and won by a bigger margin taking a 62-13 victory over the Red Devils.
Calhoun also played this game shorthanded with only seven players.
Brady Fox led CMS with six. Marks had three and Aaron West and Ryan Miliron two apiece. Jaron West and Johnny Watkins both played but did not score.
Walton, which led 21-1 at the end of the first quarter, was led by Noah Tierrebee with 14. Michael Lowe added nine, Tyler Holbert, Christian Mace and Colin Greathouse eight each, John Estep five and Clayton Fields, Jase Rhodes, Pennesi, Tucker Hunt and Starcher two each as every Tiger scored.
Walton, 14-3, is finished for the regular season while Calhoun will attempt to get its first win Monday night when it travels to Gilmer County before finishing the season at home to Clay on Eighth Grade Night next Thursday.
