The extreme hot weather continues to toast the Creston area. While there have been occasional showers ground is starting to get dry locally, just the way conditions have been to the north and south, according to reports of travelers in those areas.

There were 24 on hand for the prayer and praise meeting last Wednesday evening at the Burning Springs M. E. church. Several gifts were made an air conditioner was purchased for the church. Next on the agenda is a handicap ramp.

The katydids and other night entertainments are in full swing now and will continue to serenade until frosts and freezes put them out of business. Rodney Lynch noted that it takes just under two gallons of sucrose solution each day to feed all the hummingbirds that come to S. R. Lynch's feeders.

W. A. Wilson, Jr. has been undergoing tests at the W. V. U. hospital in Morgantown.

Alvin Engelke was undergoing training (again) down at the Mouth of Elk River. Either he is getting real smart or else the situation is hopeless.

Nancy Hall has been a patient in the Camden Clark Hospital.

The price of local crude oil rose 25 cents to $23.25/bbl.

When Two Guns found out just how many whistle pigs that the old furniture salesman had killed he was absolutely broken hearted. At first he thought that, with practice, he could improve his aim and do better. At last report he was feeling dejected and talking about giving away or selling all his guns.

It seems that a famed hunter (one that is feared by varmints) who resides out on the Mount Zion Ridge was helping the Buckeyes thin the whistle pigs. However, Paul Jones indicated that some of the meat was not properly used to make stew and PETA members took pictures of the culprit. Paul noted that donations to PETA could be mailed to his address and that he preferred cash which would be used for "good causes".

Local residents followed with interest the saga of the lawman who thought he was in hot pursuit of one of Junior Cunningham's boys over on Route 47. Turns out the fellow was some one else (who obviously was lost). When all this commotion got into full swing one of the residents in the area who is up in years and does not like trespassers started throwing the hot lead. It could be stated, as an understatement, that one point was made clear.

Local residents were saddened to hear of the death of Grantsville business and civic leader Carl R. Morris. He had been in failing health and then fell & broke his hip.

A number of local residents have animals at the Wirt County Fair. Excitement has been running high. Outgoing Fair Queen, Jennifer Baileys participated in the Parkersburg Homecoming Pageant Saturday evening and won Miss Photogenic and was a semi-finalist. Jane Engelke was honored as past Parkersburg Homecoming Queen 1998.
