(L-R) Darla Harrison, Caitlin Wilkinson, Cassidy Conley
By Dan Cosgrove
Caitlin Wilkinson, an 8th grade student at Calhoun Middle/High School, won the county-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 15, 2013 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The county-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee.
Wilkinson will now take a written test where up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in West Virginia will then be eligible to compete in the state Bee on April 5, 2013.
Wilkinson competed against 92 other middle school students to win top honors. Seventh grade student Darla Harrison came in 2nd, while 5th grade student Cassidy Conley took 3rd place.
It took 7 preliminary rounds, numerous tie-breaking rounds, a final competition and a championship round between Wilkinson and Harrison to determine the winner. Grade level winners include:
5th Grade - 1st Cassidy Conley, 2nd Tiffany Harding, 3rd Elizabeth Nary
6th Grade - 1st Destiny Wager, 2nd Jessica Summers, 3rd Alicia Mills
7th Grade - 1st Darla Harrison, 2nd Robert Twist, 3rd Alexis Phillips
8th Grade - 1st Caitlin Wilkinson, 2nd Alec Richards, 3rd Robert Smith
