When you're struggling three things you need to do:
Don't turn the ball over.
Hit your shots.
Play tough defense.
Tuesday night at South Harrison struggling Calhoun turned the ball over 25 times; missed a lot of easy shots and played lackadaisical defense.
The result was an easy 69-47 South Harrison win.
The 6-5 Hawks jumped to a 15-8 first quarter lead and slowly pulled away from there despite a couple of minor Calhoun rallies.
South Harrison was on top 33-20 at half. Calhoun cut two points off the lead in third third quarter outscoring the Hawks 18-16 but gave away most of the early second half gains it made late in the period.
The final 18-11 fourth quarter advantage for the Hawks merely set the final score.
Logan Kirby scored 16 to lead a trio of Hawks in double figures as Cory Messinger added 15 and Luke Gaines 11.
Game honors went to Calhoun's Ryan Slider with 18. He was the only member of the Red Devils to hit double figures.
Ricky Hall and Tyler Gerwig added eight for Calhoun, 1-10, while Trent Phillips had six, Mason Sheldon three and Ethyn Miller and Derek Dawson two. Luke Moore, Sam Brady and Lucas Wilson all played but did not score.
Slider led the Red Devils with seven rebounds while Hall had six.
Slider also led with three assists while Moore added two pretty assists in the second half.
South Harrison also won the reserve game by a 47-17 score.
The Hawks jumped on top 12-0 after one only to have Calhoun rebound to close the margin to 14-10 at halftime. Another scoreless quarter in the third allowed South Harrison to take a 32-10 lead.
William Baker led Calhoun, 2-9, with 11 points. He was backed by Brady with four and Luke Sheldon with two.
Dakota Jarvis, Miller, Riley Cain, David Workman, MyKia Holbert and Nick Watkins all played but did not score.
Zak Wentz led South Harrison with 13.
Calhoun will try to get back on the winning track when it plays host to Braxton County Thursday night.
