COMMISSION MOVES FLOOD MITIGATION FORWARD FOR GRANTSVILLE PROPERTIES - Calhoun EMS Struggling With Downed Ambulances

(01/12/2013)
The commission approved items related to the flood plain mitigation and removal of two Grantsville buildings, the old Western Auto and adjacent house that is falling down. The project is using previous funds. Those buildings will be demolished with the land then owned by the Town of Grantsville.

Questions why the Town of Grantsville has not demolished the old Rainbow Hotel surfaced, with the answer being the property has legal entanglements which need to be rectified by the owner.

The commission heard a report regarding ambulance problems with Calhoun EMS during the last 30 days, the service at times getting down to a single functioning ambulance, with no 4x4 ambulance in service.

Calhoun EMS has been borrowing ambulances to keep service going, borrowing from Ritchie, Kanawha, Anmore and Minnine Hamilton Health System.

The agency, in December, did give nearly $5,000 in Christmas bonuses to their employees. Commissioners indicated that while the employees deserved the bonuses, it seemed to be poor timing under such budgetary constraints.

An audit about the services of Calhoun EMS by the WV EMS Technical Support Newtwork is due soon.

The commission approved a temporary 90-day hire for former Clay sheriff Randy Holcomb, a decision Sheriff Carl Ballengee forwarded because of budgetary problems through July 1.

Deputy Justin Smith, at the request of Sheriff Carl Ballengee, was made Chief Deputy and was appointed the county's Humane Officer.

Fiduciary estate settlements were reviewed after being submitted by fiduciary Richard Frum. The commission decided to seek legal counsel from the prosecutor related to a complainant with the Charles Booher estate.

Dianne Ludwig reported on the status of the Courthouse Accessibility Improvement Grant.

The commission scheduled six meetings for February for tax equalization and review.
