It was a red letter night Monday for the Calhoun Red Devils as they took a 68-49 victory over visiting Hannan for their first win of the season.
But it was made even more special because the junior varsity scored a 37-34 victory over the Wildcats giving the Red Devils their first two win night in three years.
In the varsity game Calhoun had five players hit double figures as it pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Mason Sheldon led the way with 16 points. Ryan Slider, Trent Phillips and Ricky Hall all had 11 while Tyler Gerwig chipped in with 10.
Game honors however went to Hannan sophomore Tyler Burns who had 18 off the bench. Brad Fannin added 13 for the 1-3 Wildcats and was the only other player to hit double figures.
The Red Devils, 1-4, opened up quickly and led all the way.
Calhoun was on top 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and had pushed the lead out to 32-18 at halftime.
All thoughts of an "auto pilot" victory came crashing down as the Wildcats scored the first nine points of the second half and was able to cut the lead to one, 38-37.
But the Wildcats' surge came to a screeching halt as Phillips heated up from outside with three straight threes and the Red Devils outscored them 30-12 the rest of the way.
Calhoun used its sizeable size advantage to subdue Hannan as its inside guys - Hall, Mason, Gerwig and Phillips - controlled the boards on both ends of the court. Overall Calhoun out rebounded Hannan 42-22 with Hall getting 11 and Sheldon 10. Phillips added eight, Slider six and Gerwig four.
The Red Devils also were smooth with the ball getting four assists from Slider, Luke Moore, Phillips and Sheldon.
Moore added five points while Lucas Wilson and Ethyn Miller had one each. Sam Brady, Tyler Tanner and Derek Dawson all played but did not score.
In the reserve game the Red Devils broke open a close halftime game - Hannan led 21-19 - with a strong third quarter when they outscored the Wildcats 10-2 behind the strong inside play of Tanner who had eight in period.
The Red Devils stayed ahead by 6-8 points the rest of the way before a three-point basket by Dakota Fannin right before the final buzzer cut the winning margin to three. Fannin had 10 and was the only Wildcat to hit double figures.
Brady led Calhoun, 1-4, with 15 while Tanner added 13 and 12 rebounds.
Luke Sheldon added four for Calhoun while Miller had three and William Baker two.
David Workman, Makiah Holbert, Dakota Jarvis, Riley Cain, Austin Gribble and Nick Watkins all played but did not score.
Calhoun will try to keep on the winning road tonight when it entertains Parkersburg Catholic in a doubleheader.
