Roy L. Butcher, 81, of Morgantown, WV passed away quietly into his eternal home with his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on November 16, 2012.
Born December 15, 1930, Reedy, WV, Dr. Butcher was professor
emeritus in the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department of the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He earned his BA and MA from WVU and his PhD in Reproductive Physiology from Iowa State University. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, Alpha Zeta Fraternity, Society of the Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta Honorary Society of Agriculture, Society for the Study of Reproduction, and the National Block and Bridle Club. He was the author of over 100 publications for scientific and medical journals. He was awarded the WVU 1987-88 Benedum Distinguished Scholar Award in Biosciences and Medicine.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a 1st lieutenant and pilot.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working with Trout Unlimited.
He was preceded in death by his parents Paul H. and Cleota Butcher, and brother Paul H. Butcher, Jr.
Surviving are his wife Ruth Butcher; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Butcher and wife Penny, and David Butcher and wife Yolonda; one daughter Karen and husband Robert Ebert; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are sister Doris Fidler, and brother James Butcher and wife Betty.
Visitation was Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, WV, followed by graveside services at Stony Point Cemetery, Reedy, WV, with the Rev. William Thorn officiating.
The family thanks WVU Hospital-Family Medicine staff, Sundale Nursing Home staff, Dr. James G. Arbogast, and Dr. Vincent DelaGarza for their excellent care.
