Mavis Nadine Waggoner passed away on November 4, 2012 following an extended illness. Nadine, as she was known, was born on July 28, 1927, in Porto Rico, West Virginia to Con Otis and Wanda Tharp Hughes.
In 1946, she married Ralph Wendell Waggoner and they had one son Bob. After the passing of her husband, Nadine spent over 30 years as the manager of the Glenville Golf Course Pro-shop. During this time besides keeping an immaculate facility accompanied with beautiful flowers, she established an annual youth tournament to be held at the close of the school year. She believed that it was important to the youth to have a lifelong pass time and a safe place to grow-up while preserving the club which began in 1939.
Over the years Nadine helped raise many of the children of the Glenville area. Frequently the children would return after they were grown to reminisce with her about their golf club memories. When it was decided by the Golf Course Board that they would begin selling beer on the county property, Nadine decided that she would rather resign than sell beer to the children she had helped raise. Her last day in the pro-shop was the day that beer was delivered. Following her retirement, several of her friends including Wanda Reed, Janet Coffman, Wyene Turner, Mariana Griffith, and others established the annual Nadine Waggoner Memorial Day Tournament in honor of her many years of dedicated service.
Nadine is survived by her son, Bob and his wife, Sue; her granddaughter, Andrea Leigh Myers; her sister, Maisie Hughes Somerville; and her brother, Don Hughes, 4 nephews and 1 niece and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 19 year old brother Robert Hughes killed in WWII, brother-in-law Kline Somerville and sister-in-law Rose Hughes. Nadine was a member of the College Street Methodist Church.
Following cremation a private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
