J. Guy Wood, 83, of Millstone, died July 17, 2002 in Roane General Hospital, Spencer, WV following a long illness.
He was born in Calhoun County, the son of the late Avery and Viola
Umpstead Wood, a pioneer family in the backwoods of Bear Fork. Mr. Wood
contributed to "Tales of Bear Fork," a series written for the Hur Herald.
He was retired from the Willard Starcher Company of Spencer and was a
veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Stoney Point Church at
Altizer, where he taught Sunday School for 50 years. He was also a lay
speaker.
Surviving are his wife, Velma Booher Wood; a son and daughter in law, John
and Kathy Wood of Grantsville, WV; grandchildren, Angela Wood of Big Bend,
WV, Audrey Renee Wood of Mt. Zion, WV, Chandra Lynn Wood of Grantsville
and Benjamin John Wood of Grantsville; great grandchildren, Jada and
Brennan Ferrell of Grantsville; sister, Thelma Wyer of Grantsville; brothers,
Thomas Avery "Pete" Wood of Sand Ridge, WV and O'Dell Wood of
Stumptown, WV
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; brothers, Romeo, Denver and
George Wood and half-sister Belva Carpenter.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home in
Arnoldsburg, with the Rev. Homer Hensley officiating. Interment will be in
the Gibson Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. |
