Tyler May scored four touchdowns to lead Spencer Middle School to a surprisingly easy 40-6 victory over visiting Calhoun Middle School Thursday night.
For some reason Calhoun played flat.
Perhaps it was the on-and-off illness of three category star Seth Moore.
Perhaps it was because the Red Devils had a sense of athletic superiority after a walk-across 66-0 victory over a really weak Doddridge team last week.
Perhaps it was just "one of those things."
Whatever the reason it did not affect Spencer as the Yellowjackets took control early, taking the opening kickoff and driving the field for a touchdown - a one-yard run by May.
Calhoun quickly gave the ball back on a fumble - one of three the Red Devils would lose on the evening.
After exchanging failed drives the Yellowjackets scored again near intermission when May scored his second touchdown, this one from three yards out. The extra points gave Spencer a 16-0 lead at halftime.
Calhoun got the ball to start the second half but quickly gave it back to the Yellowjackets. This time May made the Red Devils pay with a 40-yard touchdown and a 24-0 lead.
Calhoun's first solid offensive drive of the night came next and it moved the ball deep into Spencer territory only to have the drive fizzle out at the 12.
One play was all it took for Adam Reichard to put Spencer on the board again as he traveled the 88 yards for the touchdown unimpeded by Red Devil pursuers.
Calhoun finally got on the board with time running out in the third period when Moore broke free and went 85 yards for the score, avoiding the shutout.
But the celebration was short lived as May took the ensuing kickoff and rambled 75 yards for the score to set the final margin.
Calhoun drove deep into Spencer territory once more but the drive ended on downs at about the 15 yard line.
Despite playing sparingly in the first half Moore did have a good third quarter end led the Calhoun offense with 175 yards on 10 carries before being shut down the final period.
Jake Holcomb added 43 yards of offense for the Red Devils while Caden Hicks had 13 yards and John Hart three. All of Calhoun's yards came on the ground.
For Spencer, Reichard led the way with 93 yards while May had 91.
Defensively Holcomb unofficially had seven tackles while Hicks added five. Connor Ritchie and Moore had four each.
Calhoun, 1-1, will try to get back on the winning path Thursday night when it travels to Glenville to play Gilmer County. Spencer, 2-0, is home to Braxton County. |
