ALLEGHENY TO CUT EMPLOYEES - Cutback Expected To Affect State's 2,538 Workers

(07/09/2002)
Allegheny Energy, which has over 6,000 employees nationwide, will cut its workforce during the next year by 10%, or about 600 employees.

The company has 2,538 workers in West Virginia. It was unclear how many workers in the state would lose their jobs.

The company has canceled the construction of two power plants in Arizona and Indiana.

Some of the cuts will take place through retirement and normal attrition.

The company said weak market conditions are leading to the cut-backs.
