It was one year ago Ryan "Goob" Fitzwater was critically injured when his farm tractor
over-turned near Hur, crushing him. The next few days was touch and go, with Goob fighting
for his life.
Today we will recall Goob's struggle and victory, not forgetting the painful and fearful hours
faced by Rick, Melinda and their family, and most every person who knew them in Calhoun
County and across America.
We received this note.
Dear Bob and Dianne,
It is with a humble and gracious heart that I write to you today. July 2nd is one year that Ryan
"Goob" Fitzwater was injured in his tractor accident. There is no way to say thank you enough
to the Hur Herald and the fine people of this community for everything that has been done for
our family.
People have given money, food and their time to help during his recovery. Kids played games
and raised money, a blood drive was held in his name and people responded. The updates on
the Herald were excellent. Gaylen Duskey with the Parkersburg News wrote articles on Ryan's
accident, his triumphant first walk and his brother Michael's life saving heroics. People in this
community have been so giving and concerned for him and we again thank everyone. There
has not been a day since last July that someone has not asked about his condition.
Ryan's condition today is almost 100% with a small limp due to a weak leg. He has resumed
weight lifting and running to help strengthen his legs and upper body. He plans to play football
this fall and basketball this winter. The only trouble we have now is keeping him fed and off the
golf course.
As I look back, that time in our life was a struggle but only for a short time. With God's love and
care we are better off than we were yesterday. I also think of the families that still need our
prayers and help. The Wagoner family, the Kerby's, the McKown family and the Swisher's and
many others going through trying times.
I thank the Lord every day for my family and his care of us. I again thank the fine people of this
wonderful community for all their help and concern.
Proud to live in East Hur
Rick Fitzwater
