Patricia Kay Mitchell, 71, of Sissonville, West Virginia, passed away February 16, 2012 in Sissonville.
She was born in Roane County WV a daughter of the late William Alton Simonds and Mildred Ellen Lee Simonds. Born handicapped with no legs, she attended the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center at Institute WV where she received her first legs. "Patsy" and her sister opened the Simonds Sisters Sewing Shop in Dunbar WV which they operated for a time.
Patsy won the Miss WV Wheelchair Contest allowing her to ride in several parades. On one occasion she rode an elephant. She was a former switchboard operator for the Holly Hotel in Charleston WV. When she was married she moved to Kentucky where she adopted and cared for many children, some with AIDS. She was a true angel on this earth. After retirement they moved back to Campbells Creek near Charleston. She loved to fish and took care of her brother Sam until she became too sick to do so. Patsy left behind a husband, David Null whom she met in the nursing home.
In addition to her husband she is survived by a brother, Charles Alton Simonds of Summersville WV; several nieces and nephews. PK will always be missed and loved.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Stump Funeral Home in Arnoldsburg WV. Interment will be in the Clover Cemetery at Spencer WV. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to services. |
