GSC GRAD HELPING HER SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY - Tashua Allman Is Glenville's Mayor

(12/01/2011)
Glenville, WV - Glenville State College's Tashua Allman is a very busy young woman, whose daily routine involves balancing her career, going to school, and politics.

In June of 2009, she was elected Mayor of Glenville just one month after graduating from Glenville State College with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Today, Allman is in her second term as Mayor of Glenville, and a full-time employee of her alma mater.

She was reelected as Mayor of Glenville for another two-year term in June of 2011. She had not planned on running again but was talked into it by many of her supporters. "I was not going to run because I work full time and did not feel that I had enough time to devote to being mayor. However, no one filed to run for mayor in the June election, so many people came to me and asked that I run again. I couldn't turn them down," said Allman.

During her first term as mayor, Allman was instrumental in starting 'the Street Gang,' a group of volunteers who spend time on projects to clean-up and fix-up the downtown area. She is also proud of events such as 'The National Night Out,' Halloween Party and Haunted House, and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony that have taken place in Glenville.

Her second term goals include maintaining and improving the beautification of downtown Glenville, efforts to take full advantage of the new city park by staging more events to bring more people to downtown, and continuing to work on making Glenville a great place to live and work.

Allman also has a full-time job as Academic Coordinator of the GSC College Completion Center and Office of Parent Programs. GSC opened the College Completion Center in August of 2010 to assist students who were experiencing difficulties with academics, finances, adjusting to college life, or personal problems. The goal of the center is to make students more successful and increase student retention. "It is really rewarding to help students get over the barriers that are preventing them from getting their degree. I was a student here and understand all of the pressures that you have to work through. I love helping a student who was going to leave school find a solution that allows them to stay at GSC," she said. Allman also serves as the Staff Advisor for the GSC Student Government Association.

In addition to her work with the College Completion Center and her duties as Mayor, Allman is busy working on her MBA from Salem International University. She will also begin work on an Education Degree with specializations in Spanish and Social Studies at Glenville State College in the spring of 2012.
