Alvin Dye Gainer, age 90, of Jenison, Michigan, formerly of Akron, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 26, 2011 after a brief struggle with pneumonia.
Alvin was born in Grantsville, West Virginia in 1921, one of eight children born to Alvin and Sadie Gainer. He proudly served his country aboard the USS Texas in the US Navy for the duration of WWII.
Alvin was a member of Akron Lodge #0083, as well as the Shriner's in Akron. He retired from Roadway Express after many faithful years as a truck driver, earning an award for over 5 million miles of accident free driving. His wife of 56 years, Margaret, preceded him in death in 2003.
Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Michael) Myers; his grandchildren, Michael Eric (Rachel Hillegonds) Myers, Dianne (Bryan) Cote; his great grandchildren, Isaac Myers and Julia Cote; his sister, Thelma Smith; his brother-in-law, Randall (Margie) Reed; his sister-in-law, Nell Crossland.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Crystal Manor for their loving care they provided. The Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 1, at Stroo Funeral Home, with Pastor Daniel Bos officiating. Interment in Georgetown Twp. Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Al may be given to Spectrum Health Hospice. The family will greet visitors on Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Stroo Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
