SWAT TEAM SHOOTS KANAWHA MAN - 33-year-old Omar Cowan was holding his wife and four children hostage in an apartment with a box cutter when police arrived at Amandaville.
Police got Cowan's wife and children out of the apartment, but Cowan wouldn't cooperate and threw a vase at a deputy, they said, and deputies called for a SWAT team.
The police report said the SWAT team knew that Cowan had several weapons inside the apartment, after which they broke down the door and shot him. He died shortly from the gunshot.
Deputies say they got the same call the day before that Cowan was holding his family hostage, but were able to resolve the problem.
Cowan and his family had just moved to West Virginia from New York a couple of weeks ago.
MAN SHOT AFTER BREAK-IN - A St. Albans man shot 20-year-old Joshua Sovine when he returned to his house from grocery shopping, noticing a door standing ajar.
Homeowner John Chapman got into a scuffle with Sovine, shooting him in the leg.
Police say Sovine had gone through drawers, including one with a second handgun, in an upstairs bedroom.
Chapman found Sovine hiding behind a door, when they scuffled.
Sovine was taken to the hospital where he had surgery, but once he gets out he will likely be charged with daytime burglary.
