BUFFALO - Buffalo went into Friday night's game four points away from an unbeaten season.
Calhoun went into Friday night's game one win away from a winless season.
And anyone who expected the unexpected came away disappointed.
The sixth-ranked Bisons, 6-1, scored early, often and from varying distances to run roughshod over Calhoun County, 1-7, 61-6.
Buffalo scored at the 9:50 mark of the first quarter on a 60-yard pass from Levi Jordan to Jarrett Smith. Before the quarter was over the Bisons would score three more times with the only blemish coming when Jordan missed an extra point kick. That miss gave Buffalo only a 27-0 lead instead of the 28-0 lead it could have had had Jordan been more proficient.
The Bisons added three more touchdowns in the second quarter and missed yet another extra point attempt when a run failed. Despite the problem with two conversions the 47-0 lead the Bisons had made the mountain Calhoun had to climb pretty steep.
Calhoun did cut into the lead a bit in the fourth quarter when Logan More scored on a one yard run but the Red Devils too had problems with the conversion, failing on a kick attempt to leave the score at 47-6.
Two late Buffalo touchdowns merely set the final margin.
For Calhoun there were a few positives as the team had 138 yards rushing with Cory Metz leading the way with 68 on 18 carries and Nate Cosgrove adding 37 more on seven carries. Cosgrove also had a pair of receptions for 12 yards while Austin Satterfield had two for 20 yards.
As a team the Red Devils were not plagued by penalties with only two for a total of 20 yards. They were hurt by turnovers, however, with six fumbles (three lost) with one returned 84 yards for a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Calhoun returns to Mount Zion for its final home game of the 2011 season when it entertains Wirt County next Friday night.
Wirt County, incidentally, is the team that knocked Buffalo out of the unbeaten ranks with a 33-29 victory and itself will be looking to rebound from its first loss of the season, a 27-13 setback to Williamstown. Buffalo is at Fayetteville. |
