A meeting regarding the future of Calhoun's public service districts was held in Grantsville, sponsored by the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council.
The issue for discussion, according to Fred Rader from the MOVRC, was the feasibility of consolidating the districts to make them more efficient and financially viable.
Rader said the status quo was preferred by most participating in the discussion.
"Given that consensus, it may appear that the meeting was of little value, saying it is never a bad idea to explore ways to improve how services are provided to the public," he said.
"Representatives from the Town of Grantsville and from Pleasant Hill PSD indicated that they are satisfied with current conditions for their respective utilities and are not interested in joining a new combined entity," said Rader.
They did indicate they were willing to consider "taking over" Mt. Zion PSD, but only if Mt. Zion PSD made the choice to initiate such a move, according to Rader.
Mt. Zion PSD members did not participate in the discussion, indicating their concerns that the meeting could be violating the Open Meeting law.
"The Mt. Zion PSD did express that their PSD is "about to turn the corner" on their problems," said Rader.
With the completion of the extension project anticipated to add 150 new customers in the next couple of months the PSD should have the resources to address their service issues.
"Dick Ullum and and Tom Fluharty have done a good job locating and fixing leaks. Unaccounted for water has been reduced from 46% to 33% in the last two months," Rader said.
Rader expressed his appreciation for those who attended the meeting, which included Grantsville and Calhoun officials, PSD members and a number of state and regional officials.
