The Calhoun County 4-H & FFA Youth Livestock Program is in its second year of operation. The Youth Livestock Committee has worked with the community and grant-funding organizations to build the program from the ground up.
Recently, The Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, Inc. provided a grant to the Calhoun County 4-H & FFA Youth Livestock Program to assist with the purchasing of bleachers to provide seating at the annual youth livestock show and sale.
The annual youth livestock show and sale takes place the Saturday of the WV Molasses Festival. The second annual Calhoun County Youth 4-H and FFA Livestock Show and Sale is set to take place on Saturday, September 24, 2011, with the livestock show at 10:00 a.m., the showmanship show at 3:00 p.m., and the livestock sale at 5:00 p.m.
The program has numerous community leaders, volunteers, parents, and youth working together to make it a success. The purpose of this organization is to provide learning opportunities to develop leadership, responsibility, and effective citizenship through agricultural experiences for youth involved in 4-H and the FFA in Calhoun County.
Through the medium of this program the students, who are our future leaders are encouraged in the selection, breeding, feeding and caring for high quality livestock. The program also fosters community development through outreach, education, and community involvement. The Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, Inc. was founded for and has the primary goal of supporting and conducting educational, environmental preservation, community benefit, and social welfare activities in West Virginia.
Grants are made available to nonprofit organizations that combat community deterioration and promote education, community development, and environmental preservation. Calhoun County will reap the benefit of the investment that the Mollohan Foundation has made to the youth livestock program for many years. Michelle Cutshall, Youth Livestock Committee President said, "We are so thankful to the Mollohan Foundation for their generous investment in our efforts to build a program that enriches the experience of the youth in Calhoun County 4-H and FFA."
