Eighteen Calhoun High graduating seniors were recognized for their
outstanding academic achievements at the Third Annual Honors Banquet
last night at Calhoun Middle/High School. Students also nominated teachers
and staff members to be honored during the ceremony.
Students, family members, friends, teachers and school administrators
attended the event held in "The Commons."
Guest speaker Dr. Erik J. Bitterbaum, WVU College President, spoke to the
group, reminding them beyond academic achievement "What matters is
helping others win." He spoke of values like "integrity and trust" as being
moving forces in life.

Principal Mike Offutt, who was the Master of Ceremonies, said "Tonight we
gather to honor the best of the best. The students whom we honor this
evening have reached the highest levels of academic achievement among
the Class of 2002."
Principal Offutt and Dr. Erik Bitterbaum recognized the honor students,
including David Albaugh, Aslea Bush, Shaina Cain, Nikki Church, Evan
Cunningham, Melanie Davis, Amanda Frederick, Erika Harold, Darris Hupp,
Tiffany Jones, Danielle McBride, Sonja McKown, Misty Perkins, Jennifer
Siers, Erin Smith, Dustin Wagoner, Natalie White and Shane Yeager.
CHS students nominated teachers and staff for special recognition. "People
who have made a difference in their lives," according to Offutt.
Superintendent Ron Blankenship and Dr. Bitterbaum gave the awards to
Rosemary Ailes, Larry Baker, Pam Bartlett, Greg Cartwright, Faye Chambers,
Renee Deditch, Amy Fitzwater, Deb Goff, Patricia Hicks, Cheryl McCallister,
Susan Pitts, Carol Sue Stump and Tammy Yoak.
Rev. Tim Davis gave the invocation, with special music provided by Larry
Cole and the dinner prepared by the Mt. Zion UM women.
The event was underwritten by the Grantsville Lions Club, Calhoun Banks
and Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center.
