Elizabeth - The Dora Bee Woodyard Library, in cooperation with the Courthouse Centennial Committee, Wirt County Office of Emergency Services (OES), Wirt County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and primary sponsor WesBanco Elizabeth, will present a memorial tribute ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania, Sunday, September 11th at 2 p.m. on the Wirt County Courthouse lawn.
Activities will include a flag raising by the Wirt County American Legion Post 55, singing of the National Anthem by local singer Miss Katie Blackwell, Pledge of Allegiance led by Boy Scout Troop 30, singing of "My Country Tis of Thee" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" lead by the Wirt County Singers.
The keynote address will be given by Mr. Aaron Crites, History Professor at West Virginia University-Parkersburg (WVU-P), and playing of "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes by Representative Anna Border. Benediction will be lead by Allen Taylor.
Cub Scout Troop 30 will hand out programs and free American flags. Members of Wirt County CERT team will be handing out free disaster preparedness materials.
Members of the Wirt/Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department, Wirt County EMS, Wirt County Sheriff's Office, and the West Virginia State Police will be on hand for a ceremonial wreath presentation. Bruce Wendelken will play taps.
Wirt County High School Band Drum Corp will perform a prelude. Representatives from West Virginia Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (WVDHSEM), West Virginia Secretary of State's office, West Virginia National Guard, and local officials will also be in attendance.
All members of the US Military past or present are invited to attend the ceremony in uniform to receive recognition.
The public is asked to bring their own lawn chairs. Attendees will be asked to sign a large banner prepared by Wirt County High School art classes entitled, "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning", describing personal memories of the historic day.
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito donated the flag to be raised. It
has previously flown over the US Capitol, and after the ceremony will be presented to the Beauchamp-Newman Museum.
A reception with refreshments will be held following the ceremony at the Dora Bee Woodyard Library and will include both a video presentation on the history of Sept. 11, 2001 prepared by Wirt County High School Advanced Placement (AP) History Class, and an art exhibit by Wirt County Middle School students. Books about 9/11 will also be prominently displayed.
