Last year Calhoun Middle School's football team suffered a ton of injuries
and had to play a bunch of young players en route to a winless season.
Saturday coach Rex Yoak got to see just how much those young players have
grown up as the Red Devils posted a 5-3 (touchdown) victory over Walton in
the Clay Middle School Quad Scrimmage.
In the other scrimmage Clay played Spencer Middle School.
The scrimmage was broken into three sections.
Calhoun's varsity team beat Walton's varsity team 2-0 in the first
section. In the second the teams tied 1-1. They tied in the third 2-2 as
Calhoun's reserves played a combination of Walton's reserves and varsity
since the Tigers did not have enough players to field a true reserve team.
Seth Moore and John Taylor had touchdowns in the first 20-minute
scrimmage.
Moore scored on a five-yard run capping a long drive while Taylor galloped
in from 62 yards away to cap a quick hitting drive.
Walton's offense never threatened in the first period.
The Tigers got on the board first in the second scrimmage and appeared
ready to throw a shutout at the Red Devils until Casey Ritchie hit Taylor
with a 35-yard scoring pass with less than :05 remaining on the clock.
In the final scrimmage Walton had to use several varsity players and they
scored twice against the Calhoun reserves only to be matched score for
score.
First sixth grade quarterback Caden Hicks broke free to tally a 25-yard
touchdown run the Ethyn Miller had a 40 yard run.
Calhoun starts play for keeps Thursday night when it entertains Doddridge
