CURT GARRETSON GRANTSVILLE'S NEW MAYOR - Tuesday's Canvas Kept Same Winners

(06/22/2011)
Curt Garretson is Grantsville's new mayor, according to a canvas conducted Tuesday, with Garretson taking office on July 1.

The council will be certifying the returns.

The canvas, according to recorder Helen Johnson, sustained the unofficial returns from last week's election.

Garretson still won by two votes, with Johnson saying Garretson (48) and Robert Petrosky (46) each got two more votes during the canvas.

"Some of the candidates for council had their final count slightly changed," Johnson said, but not enough to make a difference in the results.

Recorder Johnson did not seek re-election.

Incumbent Gary Knight, who has served as the town's mayor for several terms, received 31 votes to come in third.

Elected to town council: Erin Barnhart, Loretta Stevens, Andrew Smith, Dorothy McCauley, and Katheryn Kerby.

Barbara Duskey was the only candidate for town recorder. She received 73 votes, and Criss Ferrebee received 13 write-in votes.

Duskey told the Herald that she will not be filling the recorder position, saying "I had looked forward to helping the town, but I'm going to decline because of family health problems."

The council will be seeking someone to fill the slot.

Four candidates had sought the mayor's post, with 13 filing for council.
