COMMISSION ATTEMPTING TO PAY-DOWN JAIL BILL - Another Lot Being Sold At Industrial Park, Special Commission Still Investigating Mt. Zion PSD Operations, Good News For Cell Phone Users

(06/10/2011)
The Calhoun Commission is attempting to pay-down a regional jail bill which is currently $65,078.80, part of which is current and part past due.

This week the commission heard a report from Diane Ludwig, director of the Little Kanawha Area Development Corporation, that a third lot is being sold at the industrial part.

The development of the park was stalled for many years. Ludwig said that three plots have been sold, most recently pending to Little Kanawha Gas Measurement, in addition to Josh Burkett for his business, and a third lot to the Town of Grantsville.

The first major usage of the property was for the Grantsville Water Plant.

Ludwig said there are problems getting natural gas to the site, and LKADC is seeking $38,000 to bring a 2-inch line to the property from a provider, although at least two gas wells have been drilled on the site, one within recent years.

Kathy Wood, 911/OES Director, gave some positive news, a cell-provider will be utilizing a new radio tower being constructed at Broomstick, which will improve cell phone service in northern Calhoun.

Wood requested several pay raises, including one for herself, with the commission advising her that she should discuss the matter with the 911 Advisory Board first.

Commissioner Chip Westfall reported that Community Resources, Inc. is facing financial problems because of federal cuts, and is cutting personnel in counties in which they serve, including the weatherization program.

The Commission said that the investigation of practices at the Mt. Zion Public Service district is still on-going by the Special Commission of Special Investigations in Charleston.

The Commission went into a 35-minute executive session Monday to discuss several legal issues, with no action taken on the items of discussion.
