WIRT COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

(05/20/2011)
Elizabeth, W.Va. - Wirt County Emergency Operations Manager (EOM) Stephen Settle, in coordination with the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department (MOVHD), is proud to announce the formation of the Wirt County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

The CERT program will educate Wirt County citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Additionally, CERT members assist in and support the mission of MOVHD to protect the general public from the growing specter of acts of terrorism and new emerging diseases through planning, detection, communication, response, public information, and training.

Free CERT training classes will be held at the Elizabeth/Wirt Fire Department at 100 Schoolview Street, Elizabeth on Friday, June 10 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday June 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided.

Citizens who are interested in the program but cannot attend all three days of training, are encouraged to attend the Friday night session to get an overview of the program, and details on future training opportunities.

Volunteers who complete all three days of training will be awarded a CERT training completion certificate, receive a CERT backpack containing disaster relief supplies, and will become a founding member of Wirt County CERT.

Anyone interested in attending the training and becoming a member of Wirt County CERT, is asked to RSVP Bo Wriston at 304-629-3735 or   bowriston@hotmail.com by June 1. Additional information may be found on the Wirt County CERT Facebook page at   Wirt-County-CERT
