The fifth and last Saturday Fun Day for the 2010-2011 school year was held May 14th at Calhoun Middle-High School with over 280 people attending.

Saturday Fun Day is sponsored by HEADS UP, GEAR UP and the Parent-Educator Resource Center.

The Change the Future WV grant provided a healthy breakfast for the group. Approximately 400 people are scheduled to leave Calhoun County on June 11th for a trip to Idlewild, which is a reward trip for attending three of the five Saturday Fun Days.

While the children were enjoying bouncy houses provided by the Change the Future West Virginia grant and getting fitted for bicycle helmets, the parents heard from David Briles, a cancer survivor who dedicates his life to telling the story of what smoking can do to your health.

After years of smoking and using spit tobacco, in 1994, David was diagnosed with throat cancer. His voice box was removed, and now he breathes through a hole in his throat.

However, David's handicap doesn't stop him from speaking out about the dangers of tobacco use and how it changed his life. He hopes to enlighten as many tobacco users as he can in an effort to inspire and strengthen them to quit their tobacco addiction before it's too late.

The parents and children received all of the pictures taken throughout the year to work on scrapbooks.

Winners of $25.00 gift certificates for the Pit Stop were, Melissa Keener, Betty Jones, Chris Lacy, and Bunnie Marquez.
