BLAIR TO ATTEND GOVERNOR'S HONORS ACADEMY

Calhoun High School, junior, Elmer Jean Blair has been selected to attend the 2011 Governor's Honors Academy [GHA] to be held June 26 through July 16 at the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown.

Blair (pictured left) is the seventeen year old son of Elmer Blair II and Pamela of Chloe, WV and Carla Brancamp of Helena, MT.

Jean is a member of the wrestling team, Mu Alpha Theta, and Peer Mediation. He plans to attend college to study criminal justice for a career in forensic investigation.

GHA participates must be a junior at the time of application, have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (unweighted) or be in the top 10% of their class, have no semester/term grade lower than a "C", be dedicated to learning, possess an outstanding native ability, be willing to accept academic challenges, and meet the standardized testing requirement by any one of the following: a score at distinguished level on at least one of the WESTEST2 sections taken during the sophomore year; or a composite score at or above the 90th percentile on the ACT, PLAN, PSAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or another standardized test; or a score of three (3) or higher on an AP exam.

Designed to stimulate and support excellence in education through a multi-week summer program, the West Virginia Governor's Honors Academy was started in 1984 by Governor John D. Rockefeller IV. The mission of the academy is to operate an academically rich environment designed to honor high ability/high achieving students in an institution of higher education, challenging students to grow intellectually, creatively, and socially in a culturally diverse atmosphere. GHA offers many things to 180 of the top-achieving students in West Virginia.
